WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
The OceanBio Lab (OBL) and Marine Bio Lab (MBL) are project-based research laboratories in the Division of the Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas. It is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences building within the University of the Philippines Visayas Miagao Campus in Miagao, Iloilo.
THE FOUNDERS
Dr. Wilfredo L. Campos and Dr. Annabelle del Norte-Campos started the OceanBio and Marine Bio labs 22 years ago. They revamped and occupied two (2) labs situated in the basement of CAS building. These labs were empty, dust-filled, and rich in termites. The first research project implemented by OBL is under the Pacific Seaboard Program funded by DOST while MBL's first project is an in-house funded research on Telescopium telescopium.
The OBL and MBL remain to be project-based labs, and continues to foster mentorship of not only research project staff, but students working in the lab doing their undergraduate thesis/special problems and graduate students. The lab also hosts students from outside UPV and even outside of the country.
OUR FOCUS
RESEARCH
Research in the OceanBio and Marine Bio Labs ultimately aims to provide scientific results that fill in information gaps needed for the sustainable use of marine resources. Research groups continuously work with other researchers within UPV, with local government units & other government agencies, with other universities in the country as well as universities in other countries.
TEACHING/MENTORING
The OceanBio and Marine Bio labs strengthen the academic programs offered by the Division of Biological Sciences through research mentorship. The labs hosts undergraduate and graduate students working on their special problem and thesis requirements.
EXTENSION/PUBLIC SERVICE
The OceanBio and Marine Bio labs conduct workshops and training courses on survey and monitoring of coastal and fisheries resources. The lab also extends its expertise to local government units by conducting habitat assessments and focused group discussions to build a fisheries profile which serves as preliminary basis for the management of their fisheries. Moreover, the labs also host national and international conferences.
